Flags lowered to half-staff

The U.S. and Texas flags will be flying at half-staff today in honor of the victims of the tragedy in Las Vegas.

Rusche College of Business to host Evening with Executives

SFA’s Rusche College of Business will present an Evening with Executives featuring Kelley B. Hall, Bank of America’s senior vice president, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, in the McGee Business Building, Room 133. Hall will discuss “Building your Brand” and the relationship between your brand and success. He also will participate in a question-and-answer session. Faculty and staff members are encouraged to inform students of this opportunity.

Center for Career and Professional Development to host Agriculture Career Expo

Strategic Plan Strategy Update Session scheduled

Members of the SFA community are invited to attend the Strategy Update Session scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Regent's Suite A.

In these sessions, Strategic Plan working groups will make a short presentation detailing their progress and recommendations, followed by audience questions, comments and discussion.

Online ordering available for printing and graphic services

Printing and Graphic Design Services is excited to announce the launch of a new online shopping portal to meet the SFA community’s printing needs.

A range of products including letterhead, envelopes, invitations, brochures and wide format banners are offered on the website. Access the new site in mySFA using the Printing Services link to setup your account and start shopping.

The Stone Fort Museum to host ‘Deal Me In: Night at the Stone Fort Saloon’ tomorrow

The Stone Fort Museum will open as the Stone Fort Saloon with card games, barroom food, music and prizes from 6 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.

Everyone starts their evening with a pocket full of Republic of Texas replica bills to use at the card tables. Winnings can be traded in for prizes like a Stone Fort bar towel or shot glass.

“Deal Me In: Night at the Stone Fort Saloon” is part of the Nacogdoches Public Library’s "One Book: One City" project featuring Charles Portis’ 1968 novel, True Grit.

SFA Gardens to host fall plant sale

SFA Gardens will host its annual Fabulous Fall Festival Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 7, at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center.

The sale will feature a variety of hard-to-find, “Texas-tough” plants, including Texas natives, heirlooms, perennials, shrubs and trees, with an emphasis on pollinator-friendly natives as well as exclusive SFA introductions.

Parking will be available at SFA’s Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center. Visitors are encouraged to arrive early and bring a wagon for their plants.

The Nacogdoches Farmers Market's annual Fall Fling is from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at 141-163 Pearl St.

Music faculty members star in Lamp-Lite’s ‘Nunsense’

Two faculty members in SFA’s School of Music have leading roles in the upcoming Lamp-Lite Theatre presentation of the lighthearted musical comedy “Nunsense” by Dan Goggin.

Dr. Deborah Dalton, associate professor of voice and opera, plays the role of Sister Hubert, and Nita Hudson, lecturer of voice and opera, plays the role of Sister Mary Amnesia.

Walk Across Texas registration now open

Registration for Walk Across Texas is now open through Friday, Oct 13.

Beginning Oct. 16, the four week program is meant to help people of all ages establish the habit of regular physical activity. Walk, run, hike or stroll your way to earn those Texas miles!

The free program is open to all full-time and part-time faculty and staff members, retirees and graduate assistants. To register your team of four or as an individual, visit sfasu.edu/WAT. Free pedometers are available.

Cellist Ružević to perform at SFA tonight

Renowned cellist Nikola Nino Ružević will present a guest recital at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Cole Concert Hall.

Ružević, who is associate professor of cello and chamber music and the coordinator of chamber music studies at the University of North Texas, will perform with his wife, pianist Lara Ružević.

The program will feature Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata for Cello, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s “Vocalise,” and Croatian cello compositions. The concert also will feature a cello ensemble composition involving students of Dr. Evgeni Raychev, instructor of cello in SFA’s School of Music.

Award-winning film ‘Landfill Harmonic’ to be screened tonight

SFA’s School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of “Landfill Harmonic” at 7 p.m. tonight in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

“Landfill Harmonic” follows the Recycled Orchestra of Cateura, a Paraguayan musical group that plays instruments made entirely out of garbage. When their story goes viral, the orchestra is catapulted into the global spotlight.

fLOW Quartet to perform at SFA

The Dallas-Fort Worth area-based fLOW Quartet will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Music Recital Hall as part of the SFA School of Music’s Octubafest celebration.

Octubafest is an event that occurs at many universities around the world. The observance is designed to highlight the tuba and euphonium for their solo and chamber repertoire, according to Dr. J.D. Salas, associate professor of tuba and euphonium studies at SFA.

The Family Circus, created by cartoonist Bil Keane, illustrates family scenes that give warm fuzzies to its readers. However, in its early years, the comic contained underlying sarcasm and irony showing how child rearing can be its own special prison.

The comic took a spin in the mid-60s when son Jeffy was shown in pajamas, saying, “I don’t feel so good, I think I need a hug.” This comic received so much positive feedback that Keane stopped caring about the satirical comedy, and wanted to produce a message of traditional family values. It's only fitting that the comic has continued on in the hands of Keane’s son, Jeff.
