SFA Gardens to host Nacogdoches Naturally Outdoor Adventures Day tomorrow

SFA Gardens, in partnership with the SFA student chapter of the National Association for Interpretation, will host Nacogdoches Naturally Outdoor Adventures Day from 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

The family-friendly event is designed to engage participants in the outdoors and includes a range of outdoor activities for SFA students and community members of all ages. Activities include outdoor cooking demonstrations, nature and tree identification hikes led by SFA graduate students, geocaching and more.

The outdoor event is free and open to the public.

Danceworks: Reflections production to feature SFA dance program, Repertory Dance Company tonight

SFA’s dance program and Repertory Dance Company will showcase senior choreographic works and company pieces during its production of Danceworks: Reflections, which premieres at 7 p.m. tonight in Turner Auditorium.

A second showing is scheduled for 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. Tickets cost $8 for students, $10 for faculty and staff members and seniors, and $12 for general admission and can be purchased at the door.

The production will feature six senior choreographic works and choreography from each dance faculty member. The show consists of nine dances total, each with a different theme.

Annual ODK Leadership Conference scheduled for tomorrow

The annual Omicron Delta Kappa Leadership Conference will be held from 10 to 3 p.m. tomorrow on the second floor of the Baker Pattillo Student Center. Faculty members are encouraged to inform students of this free event.

The conference aims to help students develop their leadership qualities and skills so they can successfully transition into the career of their dreams.

Attendees will hear presentations by SFA alumni who represent ODK’s five pillars of leadership: scholarship, service, mass media, fine arts and athletics. Interactive breakout sessions also will be presented by student organizations representing the five areas of endorsement for SFA’s Certified Student Leader Program: communication, decision making, influence, teamwork and organization.

The speaker line-up for the event will be posted on the SFA ODK Facebook page. Check-in will begin at 9:15 a.m.

Six men’s basketball games picked up by various television networks

The Southland Conference has released the complete schedule of 2016-17 televised SFA's men’s and women’s basketball games. In addition to the men’s 19-known televised home and away tilts, five more of the Jacks’ road contests have been selected for nationwide airing.

All men’s basketball home games were already scheduled for viewing nationwide on ESPN3 and the WatchESPN app as a result of SFA’s partnership with ESPN, but now three road games have been added to the docket, including games against Abilene Christian University, the University of the Incarnate Word and Northwestern State University.

Registration open for men's basketball 2016-17 Tip-Off Weekend

Fans of SFA’s men’s basketball team can now register for the team’s Tip-Off Weekend, which is scheduled for today and tomorrow.

Those who register will have the opportunity to join at either the All-Star or All-American level. Individuals who join at these levels will be granted access to select team practices, team meetings, meals with the players and coaches, and other exclusive opportunities to interact with the Jacks.

Reigning champion bowling team begins title defense in Orlando

The reigning NCAA national champion SFA bowling team will open its title defense this weekend in Orlando, Florida, competing in the Bethune-Cookman Wildcat Invitational today through Sunday, Oct. 23.

The opening tournament of the 2016-17 season will take place at the Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando as the Ladyjacks open up the year with 13 matches over the three-day event. The Bethune-Cookman Invitational begins at 9 a.m. Central time today with five baker matches, followed by five traditional team matches starting at 9 a.m. CDT Saturday. The tournament will conclude Sunday with three best-of-seven baker style tournament matches.

Ladyjacks to face Abilene Christian University and the University of the Incarnate Word at home

The end of the season is fast approaching as the SFA soccer team turns to compete in three last home-front games. SFA had a split record last weekend when they fell to Nicholls State University, 1-0, and then won against the Southeastern Louisiana University Lions, 4-0.

Junior Hanna Barker won her eighth goal of the season during the SLU game, which breaks her previous career-high record of seven goals. The other three goals were from senior Hailey Hunt, senior Amanda Doyle and sophomore Crystal Calvit.

Walker achieves career-high in kills, Ladyjacks defeat University of Central Arkansas

Heading into Thursday night’s match, the SFA volleyball team was 4-12 all-time against the University of Central Arkansas Sugar Bears. But by eliminating needless errors, excelling defensively and getting senior middle blocker Justice Walker to a major milestone, the Ladyjacks defeated UCA in Shelton Gym.

By pounding down seven kills, Walker became the latest Ladyjack volleyball player, and the first since 2014, to amass 1,000 career kills. Makenzee Hanna added a team-best eight kills to put SFA back in the win column with a 3-0 triumph.

Chikawa Aztec Dancers returning to Día de los Muertos Fiesta

This year’s Día de los Muertos Fiesta will again feature the popular Chikawa Aztec Dancers returning to perform at the fourth annual celebration slated for 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, in downtown Nacogdoches in and around The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House.

Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead observance, is considered a cheerful celebration of life, honoring the souls of the deceased. Día de los Muertos is a Mexican term derived from the Roman Catholic All Saints’ and All Souls’ days, traditionally observed Nov. 1 and 2. An array of activities, ranging from decorating graves to creating home altars, typically highlight the celebration that can last for days.

A group of office workers in Japan recently discovered they were under surveillance, but it’s probably not what you think. After noticing a set of peering eyes in the ceiling, they realized they were being watched by a different kind of spy.

Workers photographed a kitten peering through a hole and captured images that quickly became social media sensations. Click here to view images of the covert kitty.
