The article highlights the evolution of local pharmacist and gardener Bill Jobe’s ornamental landscape and vegetable garden.

SFA flag lowered in remembrance of professor

The SFA flag on Vista Drive is flying at half-staff today in honor of Dr. Robert W. Gruebel, SFA professor of physics and astronomy, who passed away Monday. Gruebel originally joined the SFA faculty in 1968.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. this evening at Cason Monk-Metcalf. The funeral is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. tomorrow at Cason Monk-Metcalf's Sunset Chapel, located at 5400 North St. in Nacogdoches. There is a guestbook available online for anyone wishing to sign.

Center for Teaching and Learning hosting Faculty Writing Retreat

Faculty members are invited to attend the Faculty Writing Retreat Friday, June 24, on the second floor of the Ralph W. Steen Library. The retreat aims to assist faculty members with finding time for academic writing.

Open lab access will be available, as well as designated quiet zones for writing. Lunch also will be provided in addition to optional break-out sessions. Pre-registration is required. To register, visit myTraining through mySFA.

Campus Recreation

Campus Recreation offering Free Faculty Fridays

Faculty and staff members are invited to take advantage of Free Faculty Fridays, an opportunity to gain free admission to the Student Recreation Center every Friday throughout the summer.

Bring your SFA ID to the welcome desk and sign the guest log to enter. Friday hours of operation are 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

SFA announces scholarship bass fishing tournament

SFA Campus Recreation will host the fourth annual Worsham Bass Tournament beginning at safelight Saturday, June 25, at Jackson Hill Park and Marina on Lake Sam Rayburn in Broaddus.

The tournament benefits the Dr. Raymond Lee Worsham Scholarship for SFA Campus Recreation established with the SFA Alumni Association.

Thornell lands selection on South Central All-Region Second Team

SFA senior Kyle Thornell became the first Lumberjack baseball player since 2013 to earn a spot on the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings NCAA Division I All-Region Team when the Magnolia, Texas, native was announced as a South Central All-Region Second Team choice at third base.

Thornell is the fourth SFA player in program history to land a selection as an ABCA/Rawlings All-Region Team member. He also locked up the third base spot on the All-Southland Conference First Team in his final season by serving as one of the premier hitters in the Southland Conference.

SFA track and field, cross country teams place eight on Southland Conference All-Academic teams

The SFA track and field and cross country teams landed eight representatives on the 2015-16 Southland Conference All-Academic List.

Courtney High, Madeline Kaufmann, Shelby Pesek, Bria McIver and Katrina Fite were honored on the women’s academic team, while Lucas Akins, Kerry Gleason and Daven Murphree represented SFA on the men’s squad.

Lewis named to Southland Conference All-Academic First Team for second straight year

SFA junior first baseman Brittany Lewis was selected to the Southland Conference All-Academic First Team for the second consecutive year.

Lewis was a First Team All-SLC pick and was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association All-Central Region Second Team after a huge junior season. In 26 league games, she led the SLC in batting average, RBIs, hits and total bases while ranking second in slugging and on-base percentage. She also ranked third in home runs.

Local photographic and art groups plan 2016 gallery shows

The Nacogdoches Photographic Association and Nacogdoches Art League will open their 2016 gallery shows with a reception at 6 p.m. Friday, June 24, in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The theme for the photographic association show is “Landscapes and Seascapes,” and serving as juror was David Cozadd, owner/manager/designer of Galleria Z in Nacogdoches. Cozadd has had a lifelong involvement with art, including earning an undergraduate degree in art from SFA.

It's no secret. Sometimes pets are the ones who run the show. So is the case with Mitch Boyer's Dachsund, Vivian. According to Boyer, "Vivian has a larger than life personality, and I wanted to capture it in pictures."

Boyer did just that and compiled his creative, edited photos in a work titled, "If my small dog was as big as she thinks she is." Click here to view additional photos.
