"Pining for Birds Arcadian Adventure" set for May 9

Join ornithologist Cliff Shackelford and horticulturist Greg Grant on a bird and nature walk through Grant’s beloved backyard "Rebel Eloy Emanis Pine Savanna and Bird Sanctuary" in rural Shelby County from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 9.

With annual prescribed burns, regular thinning and standing snags, Grant maintains this 22-year-old, eight acre stand of loblolly pines as a habitat for cavity-dwelling birds and pine savanna wildlife. He named the sanctuary for his outdoor loving grandfather who formerly owned the property.

During the hike, attendees can see brown-headed nuthatches, pine warblers, eastern bluebirds, tufted titmice, Carolina chickadees, Carolina wrens, eastern phoebes and an assortment of woodpeckers. Prepare to explore approximately one mile on dirt trails and be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Transportation is provided and will depart from the SFA Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Center at the university's Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St., Nacogdoches.  Group size will be limited. Cost of the tour is $30 for SFA Gardens members and $35 for non-members.

For reservations, contact sfagardens@sfasu.edu or call (936) 468-1832.

Mass Communication and Sound Recording Technology departments collaborate on commercials

SFA students in the Advertising Cases and Campaign class in the Department of Mass Communication wrote commercial jingles for Nacogdoches' soon-to-open waterpark, Timber Falls. Six jingles were chosen. Students in Sound Recording Technology in the School of Music created music and instrumentation for the recorded jingles.

“It was so much fun working in in the studio with the SRT students,” said Caitlin Stuart. “What a great experience we never expected to have."

Splash Kingdom Director of Sales and Marketing Mickey Lewis, pictured in the center of the front row, told the students the jingles will be used on the website, and in radio and TV ads. Faculty members pictured are Drs. Kevin Kelleher and Linda Bond. Class members plan to tour the Timber Falls construction site with Lewis to see the progress on the waterpark.

SFA psychology students meet distinguished alumna

SFA psychology students recently met Dr. Nancy Dickey, a distinguished alumna from SFA's psychology department. Dickey was the keynote speaker at the Women in STEM luncheon held in March at SFA. The luncheon, hosted by the College of Sciences and Mathematics, aimed to promote women entering the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Dickey, a prominent leader in the field of medicine, earned her bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology from SFA before going on to earn her doctorate of medicine from the University of Texas Medical School at Houston.

Pictured, from left, are Dr. Scott Hutchens, chair of the psychology department; Melissa Lenert, double major in biology and psychology; Dickey; Dr. Dusty Jenkins, assistant professor of psychology; and Bethany Krawietz, psychology major/biology minor. After completing their studies, Lenert plans to be a researcher in the field of neuropsychology and Krawietz will enter the field of medicine.

SFA heads to Hammond for SLC Championships

Less than three months removed from a men's and women's Southland Conference indoor sweep, the SFA track and field teams will go for two more team titles at the 2015 SLC Outdoor Championships, held at the Southeastern Track and Field Complex in Hammond, Louisiana, Friday, May 8 through Sunday, May 10.

The last time a men's and women's program swept the indoor and outdoor league titles during the same year was in 2013 when SFA accomplished the feat in convincing fashion. Just two years later, the 'Jacks are in a prime position to do it again.
