State Rep. Chris Paddie to offer SFA commencement address

State Rep. Chris Paddie will offer the commencement address during SFA’s spring graduation ceremonies Saturday, May 14.

Serving his second legislative term representing the Texas House of Representatives District 9, Paddie, a native of Center, served as the vice chairman of the House Energy Resources Committee as well as a member of the Transportation and House Administration Committees.

Psychology Club, Psi Chi psychology honor society to host inaugural research seminar conference today

SFA’s Psychology Club and Psi Chi chapter, an international psychology honor society, will host the inaugural Psychology Research Seminar Conference from 10:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. today in the McKibben Education Building.

“This is a conference that will allow the students in PSY 497 to present their posters for the research that they have conducted all semester,” said Kristopher Nichols, junior psychology major and Psi Chi president. “We believe this would be a great opportunity for students in early psychology classes to see the kind of research opportunities that are possible for undergraduate students.”

Habitat for Humanity of Nacogdoches to hold Masquerade Ball

The Habitat for Humanity of Nacogdoches is hosting a Masquerade Ball beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, May 13, in the Nacogdoches Civic Center. SFA and Nacogdoches communities are invited to attend.

Tickets are available for purchase at the Habitat ReStore, or from Lacey Claver, assistant director of student engagement at SFA, at claverla@sfasu.edu or (936) 468-1367. Proceeds will benefit the Habitat for Humanity of Nacogdoches.

SFA Gardens’ Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series to feature U.S. National Arboretum geneticist

SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. Thursday, May 12, in the Ina Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St. Dr. Lisa Alexander, U.S. National Arboretum geneticist, will present “Improving the World One Plant at a Time.”

Alexander is a U.S. Department of Agriculture research geneticist working to improve woody ornamental landscape plants for the USNA. She received a Bachelor of Science in biology in 2005 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where she conducted research on American chestnut tree restoration.

Lewis, LeFlore selected to All-Southland Conference Softball Teams

Following a successful season in the heart of the Ladyjack order, SFA softball juniors Brittany Lewis and Taylor LeFlore have been selected to the 2016 All-Southland Conference Softball Teams.

Lewis has been chosen to play as first baseman for the first team. As a sophomore, Lewis was tabbed as second-team designated player in 2015. LeFlore cracks the postseason list on the third team at the third-base position.

After rising to fifth place in Southland Conference standings, SFA’s baseball team aims to keep its hot streak intact when it faces No. 8-ranked Texas Christian University at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth.

Conque announces 2016 offseason, spring award winners

SFA's head football coach Clint Conque announced his yearly offseason and on-field awards for the 2016 winter/spring semester. The awards recognize players committed to the Lumberjack football program.

“I was pleased with the efforts of the team during both the offseason and spring season and feel we made great strides,” Conque said. “We continue to work on building that culture of hard work and discipline, and we have a group of players that really accepted that mindset. We also have a good group of veteran seniors leading this team, and there were some big positives during the past semester.”

Harpist Mitchell releases new collection

Harpist Emily Mitchell, newly appointed artist-in-residence and professor of harp in SFA’s School of Music, has released her fourth CD of compositions by American flutist and composer Gary Schocker.

Recorded under the Albany Records label, “Changes” includes three pieces for solo harp, a piece for flute and harp on which Schocker joins Mitchell in the performance, and two pieces for harp duo with Mitchell and harpist Jaymee Haefner, assistant professor of harp and director for undergraduate studies at the University of North Texas.

SFA’s Music Preparatory Division to present spring recitals

Students in the Music Preparatory Division of SFA’s School of Music will present their spring recitals today through Tuesday, May 17.

“The students have worked hard this semester in order to bring their gift of music to parents, families and friends,” said Pat Barnett, division director.

The SFA Choristers, directed by Carolyn Andrews, will perform at 7 p.m. tonight in the Cole Concert Hall on campus.
