Top Scholars to present at Undergraduate Research Conference

Faculty and staff members are invited to join in celebrating top scholars and finalists along with their mentors during the Undergraduate Research Conference Tuesday, April 18. Top scholar presentations will begin at 4 p.m. in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Theater, followed by poster presentations, which will begin at approximately 6 p.m. in the Twilight Ballroom.

If faculty members would like to assign this conference as an extra-credit opportunity, student ID card swipe machines will be available from 5:50 to 7:30 p.m. in the Twilight Ballroom.

To utilize the extra credit opportunity, contact Dr. Elizabeth Tasker-Davis, associate professor of English, at taskerea@sfasu.edu.

SFA Gardens to serve as event partner for Texas Pollinator PowWow

Experts from across the U.S. will converge May 5 through 7 at the Nacogdoches Exposition Center, located at 3805 Northwest Stallings Drive, as SFA Gardens welcomes the 2017 Texas Pollinator PowWow.

This year’s event will focus on biodiversity and the many ways pollinators, plants and humans depend on one another for survival.

Graduate school fair taking place today

SFA’s graduate school fair will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

A total of 15 SFA graduate programs will be represented, along with five visiting graduate programs from LeTourneau University, Tarleton State University, Texas Woman's University, the University of Texas at Arlington and the University of North Texas.

Additional questions related to graduate school will be answered during a panel discussion from 11 a.m. to noon in the student center Multimedia Room.

Faculty members are encouraged to inform students about this opportunity.

SFA Gardens’ lecture series to feature Chandor Gardens horticulturist tomorrow

SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. Steven Chamblee, director of Chandor Gardens in Weatherford, Texas, will present, “Great Garden Ideas.”

Chamblee has been active in horticulture for 40 years. He began developing his green thumb in the 1970s while transplanting trees with his father.

Orientation Programs planning fall Weeks of Welcome event

SFA Orientation Programs staff members are currently planning the Weeks of Welcome fall schedule.

Weeks of Welcome is a week-long event that aims to welcome new students to campus and introduce them to campus life. For returning students, the event serves as a way to become involved and interact with new students and campus organizations.

Event proposals and sponsorships are currently being collected. More information about Weeks of Welcome is available here.

Payment due tomorrow for Early Childhood Laboratory fundraiser

SFA’s Early Childhood Laboratory is selling fajita dinners to help raise funds for the ECHL’s Parent Teacher Organization.

The meals are sponsored by Sombrero’s Mexican Bar and Grill and will include fajitas, beans, rice, three tortillas and a cookie.

Tickets are $10 per plate and can be purchased at the ECHL office. Payments are due by 5 p.m. tomorrow.

Meals will be available for pick-up from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday, April 27, at the south entrance of the Janice A. Pattillo Early Childhood Research Center.

University of Arkansas at Little Rock defeats Lumberjacks, 10-4

Down by one run entering the bottom of the seventh inning, SFA’s baseball team witnessed the University of Arkansas at Little Rock turn a close game into a runaway when the Trojans drove in six runs on six hits. The runs led to a 10-4 setback for SFA Tuesday at Gary Hogan Field in Little Rock.

The Lumberjacks received a pair of hits from SFA senior Conner Fikes and home runs from juniors Josh Evans and Will Foreman.

Leyvani receives runner-up honors at Jim West Intercollegiate

SFA’s men’s golf team and the rest of the 12-team field at the Jim West Intercollegiate played almost half of Tuesday's final round before the rest of the event was canceled due to rain.

The Lumberjacks earned a seventh-place finish at 4-over 580 and SFA sophomore Angelo Leyvani finished with a 5-under 139 after posting a 3-under 69 and a 2-under 70 Monday, tying for second overall.

Lautensack ties for eighth, SFA finishes 11th at Hoya Invitational

SFA’s women’s golf team earned an 11th-place finish Tuesday at the Hoya Invitational in Beallsville, Maryland. The Ladyjacks posted a 35-over 323 during the final 18 holes, finishing with an 82-over 946 for the 54-hole event.

SFA redshirt sophomore Erica Lautensack was the top Ladyjack finisher, tying for eighth overall with a 9-over 225 after posting an 8-over 80. The showing gives Lautensack her eighth career top-10 finish and fourth of the season, while finishing among the individual top-20 for the 16th time.

Trumpet Ensemble to perform works of Handel, Wagner

The Trumpet Ensemble at SFA will perform a diverse concert ranging from traditional fanfares to a newly commissioned work at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 22, in the Cole Concert Hall on campus.

Also known as The Wrecking Crew, the ensemble is a music class, made up of mostly trumpet majors, which meets each spring, according to Stephen Campbell, visiting professor of music at SFA and the ensemble’s director. The concert will feature performances by student percussionists, faculty organist Dr. Christina Harmon, men’s chorus, and music faculty members Dr. Richard G. Leonberger and Dr. Scott LaGraff.
