Strategic plan update meeting to take place April 7

A meeting to update the campus community on the progress of the strategic plan has been slated for 2 p.m. Friday, April 7, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Theater.

During the meeting, members of various strategic planning teams will provide updates on work from their areas.

Rusche College of Business establishes mentorship program

SFA's Rusche College of Business has implemented a mentorship program to provide students with an additional resource outside of an academic setting.

The program matches members of the Rusche College of Business Executive Advisory Board with an SFA student based on the student’s goals, the mentor’s industry specialty and location, and personalities. Mentors advise and guide students as they advance in college and help students launch their careers.

Undergraduate Research Conference winners announced

SFA’s Office of Academic Affairs and School of Honors are pleased to announce the 2017 Undergraduate Research Conference top scholars and finalists. Click here to view the full list of winners.

Faculty and staff members are invited to join in celebrating these students and their mentors at the Undergraduate Research Conference at 4 p.m. April 18 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center. Top scholar presentations will be held in the student center theater followed by finalists' poster presentations in the Twilight Ballroom. Food will be served.

SFA Gardens’ lecture series to feature nationally recognized palms expert tomorrow

SFA Gardens will host the monthly Theresa and Les Reeves Lecture Series at 7 p.m. tomorrow in the Brundrett Conservation Education Building at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St. Grant Stephenson, founder of Horticultural Consultants Inc. in Houston and an expert on cold-hardy palms, bamboo and cycads, will present, “Understanding Palms to Understand Their Needs to Thrive in the Landscape.”

With more than 30 years experience in the nursery industry, Stephenson is particularly focused on varieties that thrive in the Gulf Coast climate. His fascination with the plant world began when he was 3 years old while working alongside his grandmother in her gardens.

Faculty members hosting teach-in today in honor of International Women’s Day

A group of SFA faculty members are hosting a teach-in from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. today in the Steen Library, Wyatt Room, in honor of International Women’s Day. The event is being held in lieu of the nationwide general strike that's scheduled to occur today, also known as "Day Without a Woman."

The teach-in will comprise 30-minute segments throughout the day and will be led by faculty and staff members who will present on women and women’s issues within their discipline. The teach-ins are meant to be practical and action-focused.

A postcard writing party will follow from 6 to 8 p.m. where attendees may write postcards to local, state and federal legislators about issues that are important to them.

The event is free and open to the public. An ID swipe will be available to track student attendance if faculty members are interested.

Kick Axe Wellness Challenge week four rankings released

SFA’s Employee Wellness staff members would like to recognize and congratulate the top three winning teams for exemplifying wellness throughout the fourth week of the Kick Axe Wellness Challenge.

Team HD Axetreme placed first. Team members include: Reba Carroll, Jayde Nelson, Erica Smith and D'Andrea Jones.

Team Blew by You placed second. Team members include: Carrianne Mance, Brooklee Raney, Amie Ford and Stephen Ford.

Team #GoalDiggers placed third. Team members include: John Wyatt, Aleta Spivey, Rebecca Garrett and Nathan Pruitt.

Ladyjacks finish eighth at University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Invitational

SFA’s women’s golf team slipped two spots in team standings during the final round of the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Invitational, finishing eighth among the 13-team field with a 103-over 955 Tuesday in McAllen. The Ladyjacks closed out the event with a 37-over 321 in round three.

SFA senior Jessie White led the Ladyjacks with a 22-over 235, including a 10-over 81 in round three, allowing her to finish tied for 16th. The finish is White's sixth top-20 showing of the season and the 17th of her Ladyjack career.

Grabowske's second-straight 10-strikeout game leads Lumberjacks to 9-2 win

With the help of a second-straight dominant outing by SFA junior righty Tony Grabowske, SFA's baseball team defeated Grambling State University 9-2 Tuesday at Jaycees Field.

Grabowske, a native of New Brighton, Minnesota, struck out 10 batters for the second time in as many starts, while SFA shortstop and leadoff hitter Tyler Kendrick went 3-for-5 with a game-best three RBI.

Raychev to present ‘Musical Foray’ cello performance

SFA’s College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Dr. Evgeni Raychev in a faculty cello recital at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 23, in the Cole Concert Hall on campus.

The recital, titled “Musical Foray,” takes the listener into the world of the great composer Gabriel Fauré with other selections by Carl Maria von Weber, J.S. Bach and Joseph Haydn.

Parr to present ‘Contrasts in Romantic Piano Music’

SFA’s College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Dr. Andrew Parr in a faculty piano recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 21, in the Cole Concert Hall on campus.

A presentation of the Cole Performing Arts Series, the recital will feature Parr performing “Contrasts in Romantic Piano Music.” The program includes Johannes Brahms’ Piano Sonata No 1, Op. 1 and a group of pieces by Spanish composer Isaac Albéniz from his “Iberia Suite.”

Closing reception slated for Mora art exhibition tomorrow

A closing reception for an exhibition of work by artist Juan de Dios Mora currently showing in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House is planned for 5 to 7 p.m. tomorrow with the artist in attendance.

The exhibition, which opened Jan. 26, features Mora’s finely detailed block prints – some printed with a single color and others featuring multiple colors. Mora is a senior lecturer in the art department at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Voice faculty member Davis to present recital tomorrow

SFA’s College of Fine Arts and School of Music will present Charlotte Davis performing a faculty voice recital at 6 p.m. tomorrow in Cole Concert Hall on campus.

Dr. Ron Petti, pianist and director of accompanying for SFA's School of Music, will perform with Davis.
