Spirit teams hosting Nationals Showcase tomorrow on campus

SFA’s spirit teams will host the annual Nationals Showcase at 3 p.m. tomorrow in Johnson Coliseum.

All spirit teams will perform nationals routines, and a few guest performances will be included.

The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact T.J. Maple, coordinator of spirit programs, at (936) 468-1604.

Faculty and staff members invited to breakfast April 5

SFA’s Social Events Team will host a come-and-go faculty and staff breakfast from 7 to 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 5, in the East College Dining Hall.

For $3, faculty and staff members can enjoy an all-you-care-to-eat breakfast while catching up with colleagues and making new campus contacts. Door prizes will be awarded.

These events are brought to you in the spirit of the “SFA Envisioned” strategic plan, which includes fostering a culture of engagement within the campus community.

Relay for Life event tonight

The Nacogdoches County Relay for Life American Cancer Society event will take place from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. tonight at the Johnson Coliseum parking lot.

Relay For Life is the signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. The event aims to bring communities together by remembering loved ones lost, honoring survivors of all cancers and raising money to help the American Cancer Society make a global impact on cancer.

Faculty and staff members are invited to learn more about the relay, become a member, donate, dedicate a luminaria or participate in tonight's walk.

Department of Agriculture hosting Breakfast on the Farm April 29

SFA’s Department of Agriculture will host Breakfast on the Farm from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 29, at the Todd Agricultural Research Center Beef Center, located at 442 CR 123 off Highway 259 North.

The event will include a free pancake breakfast, a hayride, and opportunities to explore the farm to view animals and witness Southwest Dairy milking demonstrations at 10 and 11 a.m.

Tickets are required and can be picked up from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning April 10 at the Nacogdoches County Farm Bureau Office, located at 2303 NW Stallings Drive. Tickets are limited.

SFA Gardens plant sale tomorrow

SFA Gardens will host its annual Garden Gala Day Plant Sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, 2900 Raguet St., in Nacogdoches.
 
The sale will feature a variety of hard-to-find, “Texas-tough” plants, including Texas natives, heirlooms, tropicals, perennials, shrubs, trees with an emphasis on pollinator-friendly selections, as well as exclusive SFA introductions. The featured plants are extensively trialed before being offered to the public and are produced by staff members and volunteers of the SFA Gardens.

Sexual Assault Awareness Month events to take place in April

The Family Crisis Center of East Texas will partner with multiple campus departments to host events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April.

Events will include a prevention fair that will allow students to learn about the risk factors of sexual violence, a workshop providing education about the warning signs of an abusive relationship, as well as a march against violence that will feature an inaugural Survivor Obstacles event that will give participants a glimpse into what survivors experience when reporting sexual assault.

SFA hosting Earth Day celebration Saturday

SFA’s Arthur Temple College of Forestry and Agriculture and SFA Gardens will host an Earth Day celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center located at 2900 Raguet St.

The event, held in conjunction with the SFA Gardens Mast Arboretum spring plant sale, is a family-friendly gathering that aims to engage the community in the outdoors and offer information about sustainable living.

Diversity Week kicking off Monday

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will kick off its annual Diversity Week Monday, April 3. The week will feature social and educational programs demonstrating the value of diversity and multiculturalism and creating meaningful dialogue in the SFA community.

The Diversity Week kickoff event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday, April 3, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Plaza and will feature a diversity canvas, where students are encouraged to help paint a mural showcasing SFA’s diversity.

Spring swim lesson registration ends April 3

SFA’s Student Recreation Center is offering child swimming lessons April 11 through May 4 for children of all ages. The course teaches challenging and progressing lessons from the American Red Cross program, and all teachers are certified American Red Cross instructors.

The registration deadline is Monday, April 3.

Women's self-defense class offered April 4

SFA's Student Recreation Center and the university police department will offer a women's self-defense class at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, in the gymnastics room of the Norton H.P.E. Complex on campus.

Attendees will learn the fundamentals of self-defense from a teacher certified in the Rape Aggression Defense System.

The class is open to all women on campus, including employees and students.

Spring pool memberships now on sale

For the first time, SFA’s Student Recreation Center is offering spring pool memberships. These memberships would work well for those who would like to use the center's outdoor pool and courtyard without buying a full-facility membership. Courtyard amenities include sand volleyball courts, basketball courts and horseshoe pits.

Individuals seeking membership must be current faculty and staff members, SFA students not enrolled during the current semester or members of SFA’s Alumni Association. Family members are designated as those living in the same household.

Baseball winning streak on the line against University of the Incarnate Word

In possession of the nation’s eighth-longest active winning streak, SFA’s baseball team is traveling today to begin a three-game Southland Conference series against the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio.

The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. today and will close out the series with another game at 3 p.m. tomorrow.

Former SFA director of bands Whitwell to be honored at Richardson concert

A former director of bands at SFA will be honored when SFA's Wind Ensemble performs at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, at the Eisemann Center for Performing Arts in Richardson.

Honoree John L. Whitwell was director of bands in the School of Music from 1987 to 1993 and was inducted into the SFA Band Directors Hall of Fame in 2011. Whitwell will be honored at the concert for his years of service to the profession and, most notably, for his six years as director of bands at SFA. He will guest conduct "Irish Tune from the County Derry" by Percy Grainger.

SFA’s Alumni Association will host a reception following the concert. Tickets may be purchased online here.

Percussion Ensemble presenting program of varied works

The Percussion Ensemble at SFA will perform a concert of diverse and intriguing works at 6 p.m. Monday, April 10, in Cole Concert Hall on campus.

The program will feature new and standard compositions for small chamber groups and large ensemble by Daniel Levitan, Rudiger Pawassar, Steven Snowden, Nigel Westlake and Edgard Varèse, according to Dr. Brad Meyer, director of percussion studies in the SFA School of Music.

‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’ showing tonight and tomorrow

East Texas opera lovers will see a first when they attend SFA’s School of Music’s performance of Otto Nicolai’s “The Merry Wives of Windsor” at 7:30 p.m. tonight and tomorrow in Turner Auditorium on campus.

“The Merry Wives of Windsor” is rarely performed outside of German-speaking countries unless a university opera program performs it in English, according to Dr. Deborah Dalton, associate professor of voice at SFA and the opera’s director.

Theatre students presenting Heifner play ‘Twister’ tonight

SFA’s School of Theatre will present the student-directed, one-act play “Twister” by SFA Playwright-In-Residence Jack Heifner at 7:30 p.m. tonight and at 2 and 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Downstage Theatre on campus.

McAllen senior Pedro Adan Dominguez is the director, and he describes “Twister” as the story of a couple that survives a destructive natural disaster to find that their dreams for the future have been very different.
