Flags lowered through March 7 in honor of Chief Justice Jack Pope

The Texas and U.S. flags will be lowered to half-staff today through Tuesday, March 7, in honor of former Supreme Court Chief Justice Andrew Jackson “Jack” Pope Jr. as directed by Gov. Greg Abbott.

Flags will return to full-staff Wednesday, March 8.

Alumni Association, SFA Athletics to host Sportsman Social tonight

SFA’s Alumni Association and SFA Athletics invite faculty and staff members to attend the Sportsman Social from 5 to 8 p.m. tonight at the new Meadow Ridge Archery and Gun range in Nacogdoches.

Alumni and friends of the university are invited to network with others in the Nacogdoches community. The event is free and open to everyone, not just sportsmen. Attendees will have an opportunity to shoot in the indoor range for $30, but it is not a requirement to attend.

Faculty members invited to submit undergraduate research highlights

The summer 2017 Council on Undergraduate Research quarterly is calling for faculty members to submit undergraduate research highlights.

Undergraduate research highlights briefly describe peer-reviewed research or scholarly work in academic journals, books and book chapters, web-based publications and juried performances that have occurred within the past six months.

Submissions must be in print and include one or more undergraduate co-authors. Submissions will be accepted throughout the end of the day today.

Alumni Association Member Night scheduled for tomorrow

Join SFA's Alumni Association for Member Night tomorrow at the last home basketball games against the Sam Houston State University Bearkats.

All current members get up to six free tickets.

Campus Recreation hosting Parents Night Out tonight

Campus Recreation is hosting a Parents Night Out tonight. Parents can drop kids off as early as 6 p.m.

Kids will enjoy a fun-filled night of camp activities, pizza and a movie. Parents may pick up their children any time before midnight. The cost is $20 per camper. Registration closes at 5 p.m. today.

Hayes’ accuracy leads Ladyjacks to defeat Nothwestern State University, 80-67

Tensions were high Thurdsay as Northwestern State University came to Johnson Coliseum for the second match-up of the season between the SFA women's basketball team and Lady Demons.

SFA sophomore Chanell Hayes scored 16 points, tying her career high. Senior Taylor Ross also posted 16 points, eight assists and five rebounds, further helping the Ladyjacks secure the win.

Lumberjacks fall 72-67, home conference winning streak ends

Prior to Thursday night’s Southland Conference match-up between SFA’s men’s basketball team and Northwestern State University in Johnson Coliseum, more than five years had elapsed since a team other than the Lumberjacks laid claim to a win inside the building.

Unfortunately for SFA, an untimely outage on offense put an end to the country’s most dominant in-conference, home-court winning streak as the Lumberjacks fell to the Demons, 72-67.

Ladyjacks fall to Sam Houston State University in conference opener

SFA’s tennis team began Southland Conference play Thursday against Sam Houston State University and concluded the day with a 5-2 loss in Huntsville.

SFA senior Denise Maxl and freshman Gabi Guilarte each won singles matches, earning the only points the Ladyjacks received. In the number-one singles flight, Maxl posted a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win.

Softball on the road for final preseason tournament in Missouri

SFA’s softball team will compete in what could be their toughest competition of the season at the Mizzou Softball Tournament this weekend in Columbia, Missouri. The Ladyjacks will begin the event competing against Butler University at 3 p.m. today at the Mizzou Softball Stadium.

The Ladyjacks will face host team, No. 24 University of Missouri, at 8 p.m. tonight and will retake the field at 10 a.m. tomorrow for a second game against Butler. The Ladyjacks will end Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. game against the University of Maryland. The tournament will conclude after a 10 a.m. game against No. 4 University of Oregon.

Orchestra concert to premiere student’s composition Monday

The Orchestra of the Pines at SFA will present the program “With a Stroke of a Pen” at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 6, in Cole Concert Hall on campus.

The concert, which will feature the world premiere of “Fantasy: Beyond the Forest” by SFA music competition student Kyle Henkel of Argyle, Texas, includes a program of music in which each piece tells a story of suspect and mystery, according to Dr. Gene H. Moon, director of orchestras at SFA. Henkel is the winner of this year’s composition competition in SFA's School of Music.

Swingin' Axes, Aces to perform music of top jazz composers tonight

The Swingin' Axes and Swingin' Aces at SFA will perform a concert featuring works by Sammy Nestico, Gordon Goodwin, Pat Metheny and other jazz and big band greats at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Cole Concert Hall in the Wright Music Building on campus.

The Aces, directed by Dr. J.D. Salas, associate professor of tuba and euphonium studies in the SFA School of Music, will perform arrangements of "Splanky" and "Day In, Day Out" by Nestico, long time composer/arranger for the Count Basie Orchestra. Nestico recently celebrated his 93rd birthday.

Film series to feature 'Without Bound: Perspectives on Mobile Living' tonight

SFA’s School of Art and the Friends of the Visual Arts will present a free, one-night screening of "Without Bound: Perspectives on Mobile Living" at 7 p.m. tonight in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House downtown.

"Without Bound" is a documentary by SFA's own Michael Tubbs, media specialist for SFA's College of Fine Arts, and SFA alumnus Aaron Harlan about those who choose to ditch their permanent homes and opt for a mobile lifestyle, living out of recreational vehicles or vans. The film focuses on the personal philosophies of the individuals who choose this form of nomadic lifestyle.
