Dr. Raul Prezas

Prezas attended the Ohio Speech-Language-Hearing Association Convention this past weekend and delivered two invited and peer-reviewed seminar presentations titled “Phonological Assessment and Treatment of Bilingual Spanish-English Children with Highly Unintelligible Speech” and “Evaluating and Enhancing Children’s Phonological Systems: Expediting Intelligibility Gains.”

Prezas had the distinct pleasure of collaborating with two trailblazers in the profession of speech-language pathology at the convention, Dr. Carol Westby and Dr. Barbara Hodson. Prezas and Hodson are currently working on a phonological assessment tool for bilingual (Spanish-English) children.

Symposium on Arts and Research scheduled for tomorrow

The Office of the Provost will host the 2018 Symposium on Arts and Research, a one-day event celebrating the research, scholarship and artistry of SFA faculty members, tomorrow. Faculty research from the past year and research in progress will be showcased.

This event will honor the symposium's Spotlight Presenters and the Office of Research and Graduate Studies' grant award recipients with an awards presentation at noon. Hors d'oeuvres will be served.

Office of Multicultural Affairs to present 'The Vagina Monologues' tomorrow

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will present Eve Ensler’s play "The Vagina Monologues" at 6 p.m. tomorrow in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

The play will be performed by female faculty and staff, students and community members. The production, written by Ensler in the 1990s, is based on real-life conversations with women about gender, sexual experiences and gender-specific terms as a whole. The purpose of presenting the play is to bring awareness to issues such as women’s rights and empowerment, gender and violence against women.

Cost is $2 at the door. Proceeds benefit the Family Crisis Center of East Texas.

Concert to celebrate great American songs of the 1930s through 1950s

SFA’s Calliope Concert Series will feature the program “I Won’t Dance: An Evening of Great American Song” at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 5, in the Music Recital Hall in the Wright Music Building.

The recital features guest mezzo soprano Erin Roth Thomas of Plano performing with her sister, Kayla Roth, instructor of music theory and ear-training, who will accompany on piano. Among the tunes to be performed are “I Won’t Dance” by Cole Porter; “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” by George and Ira Gershwin; “What’ll I Do?” by Irving Berlin; “I’ve Got You Under My Skin” by Jerome Kern, and many more.

SFA’s new Celtic Harp Band to perform Irish favorites

SFA’s School of Music and its Calliope Concert Series will present the Celtic Harp Band in concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 8, in Cole Concert Hall.

Present and past SFA harp students will come together to perform Irish music on smaller, Celtic harps. The program also will include poetry of W.B. Yeats, James Joyce, Thomas Moore, Eavan Boland and Spike Milligan read by Dr. Jamie Weaver, associate professor of music history. Among the selections to be performed are “Londonderry Air (Danny Boy),” “The Harp That Once Through Tara’s Halls” and “Wearin’ o’ the Green.”
