SFA flag to be lowered to half-staff Monday

The SFA flag on Vista Drive will be flown at half-staff Monday, Feb 19, in memory of William G. Hollingsworth, an honors student music teaching major from McGregor, Texas, who died in an automobile accident Wednesday.

The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs is gathering information regarding the funeral and on-campus memorial gatherings. For more information, call (936) 468-7249, or email dosa@sfasu.edu.

Flags lowered to half-staff

The U.S. and Texas flags will fly at half-staff through sunset Feb. 19 in honor of the victims of the mass shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Interior design senior showcase opening tomorrow

Senior interior design students will showcase their talents during the “Essence of Design” exhibit on display through April 5 on the second floor of Steen Library.

The exhibit is open to the public and will kick off with an opening reception from 11 a.m. to noon tomorrow. Each of the 10 students is allotted a 64-square-foot area to create a display that showcases his or her personality, skills and design philosophy.

SFA Gardens to host Great Backyard Bird Count tomorrow

SFA Gardens and the university’s student chapter of the National Association for Interpretation are sponsoring the Great Backyard Bird Count from 9 a.m. to noon tomorrow at the Pineywoods Native Plant Center, located at 2900 Raguet St.

This free, outdoor event will have activities designed to increase knowledge and appreciation of birds for youth and adults. A variety of family-friendly, hands-on learning activities will be set up, including using binoculars, learning bird identification skills, playing bird games and making bird-related crafts.

In addition, there will be opportunities to participate in the national Great Backyard Bird Count as participants count birds for science with assistance from the Pineywoods Audubon Society and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department non-game ornithologist Cliff Shackelford.

Showcase Saturday scheduled for Feb. 24

Future college students will have the opportunity to experience a taste of campus life during a free, action-packed open-house Saturday, Feb. 24.

Prospective students can visit with university faculty and staff members, tour the campus and residence halls, and preview academic programs during the SFA Showcase Saturday event.

Alumni Association accepting nominations for the 2018 SFA Alumni Awards

Nominations for the 2018 SFA Alumni Awards are now being accepted. The Alumni Association invites you to nominate a faculty member deserving recognition.

Awards include Distinguished Alumnus, Distinguished Professor, Lumberjack Pride and Outstanding Young Alumnus. Nominations are due Thursday, March 1.

The awards presentation is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 7.

Bus ride to SFA vs. Sam Houston State University basketball games

The Alumni Association is offering a bus ride to the men’s and women’s basketball games against Sam Houston State University departing at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3, from the parking lot outside the SFA Alumni Association office.

The cost of the ride is $35 and includes a general admission game ticket, drinks, snacks and pizza on the way home.

Campus Recreation hosting Parents Night Out tonight

In an effort to help parents enjoy a child-free, Valentine’s evening out, Campus Recreation is hosting Parents Night Out tonight.

Kids will enjoy a fun-filled evening of camp activities, a meal and a movie. Parents can drop off their children as early as 5:30 p.m. and can pick them up any time before midnight.

The cost is $20 per child. Registration closes at 5 p.m.

North Forney High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble to perform

The North Forney High School Indoor Percussion Ensemble will present a performance of the show “End of Days” at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 23, in Cole Concert Hall.

The group is competing in the 2018 season with the show “End of Days,” which reflects on the tumultuous events surrounding the end times as told in the Book of Revelations.

The program begins with Modest Mussorgsky’s mysterious “Night on Bald Mountain” and transitions to Jacob Remington’s “Prelude to Paradise.” The final victory is portrayed by Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2 Movement 5, also known as “The Resurrection Symphony.”

Acclaimed printmaker Loughridge to demonstrate unique techniques at SFA

SFA’s School of Art printmaking and graphic design programs will sponsor visiting artist Leon Loughridge the week of Feb. 26 through March 2.

Loughridge, a printmaker from Denver and owner of Dry Creek Art Press, will work on an edition of handmade prints and teach classes in the Japanese Moku Hanga style of printing.

A free public presentation of his work and unique techniques is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the Art Building, Room B106.

Nashville-based Barefoot Movement to bring bluegrass music to SFA

Bluegrass fans can enjoy some of the freshest music on the bluegrass scene when The Barefoot Movement performs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, in Turner Auditorium.

Start your spring break celebration a little early with this Nashville-based group that has been heralded by Country Music Television Edge as "one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene."

Prior to the performance, artist, musician and SFA Professor Emeritus Charles D. Jones will present an informative talk at 7 p.m. in Griffith Gallery.
