Teaching Showcase to be held today
SFA’s Center for Teaching and Learning is hosting the 2017 Teaching Showcase at 2 p.m. today in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Multimedia Room.
The showcase provides an opportunity for faculty and staff members and teaching assistants to share best practices, recognize colleagues’ innovative teaching methods and hold cross-disciplinary conversations to create better learning opportunities for students. This event will be held annually. The showcase features 10 five-minute presentations from faculty members from across campus.
This year’s presenters include: Lisa Bentley, Department of History; Dr. Mary Catherine Breen, Department of Secondary Education and Educational Leadership; Dr. Jacqueline Cowan, Department of English and Creative Writing; Drs. Linda Levitt and Joyce Johnston, Department of Languages, Cultures and Communication; Dr. Angela Jones, DeWitt School of Nursing; Dr. Rachel Jumper, School of Human Sciences; Dr. Nick Long, Department of Mathematics and Statistics; and Drs. Chris McKenna and Carol Wright, Department of Business Communication and Legal Studies.
Refreshments will be provided. For more information, visit the Teaching Showcase website.
Presentation to focus on helping students succeed
Student success is imperative to the success of any university, and a presentation Friday afternoon will feature an expert on programs that help students succeed.
“No institution can be successful if its students are not successful,” said Dr. Dana Cooper, executive director of SFA’s Student Success Center. “It is incumbent on us — as faculty and staff members at a teaching institution — to not see the students who are in our classrooms as they are currently. We must see the people they can become with our guidance and support at a critical juncture in their lives.”
Faculty and staff members are invited to hear the presentation by Dr. David Laude, senior vice provost for strategic initiatives at the University of Texas at Austin, at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, in the McGee Business Building, Room 133. Laude implemented a program that helped UT students achieve the same grades as peers whose SAT scores were as much as 200 points higher.
Dr. Steve Bullard, SFA provost and vice president for academic affairs, said Laude's visit is an example of SFA's dedication to being a learning institution. “Dr. Laude's visit will highlight innovative ways to help students succeed, which helps all of us live the ‘one Lumberjack at a time’ brand each day.”

Alumni Association, Department of Athletics to host Sportsman Social in March
SFA’s Alumni Association and Department of Athletics invite faculty and staff members to attend the Sportsman Social from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 3, at the new Meadow Ridge Archery and Gun range in Nacogdoches.
Alumni and friends of the university are invited to network with others in the Nacogdoches community. The event is free and open to everyone, not just sportsmen. Attendees will have an opportunity to shoot in the indoor range for $30, but it is not a requirement to attend.
For more information, visit the Alumni Association website.
Faculty, staff members offered free admission to tomorrow's double-header
SFA faculty and staff members will be offered free admission to the basketball double-header beginning at 5:30 p.m. tomorrow in Johnson Coliseum. The Ladyjacks will play first against Abilene Christian University, followed by an 8 p.m. Lumberjack showdown against Lamar University.
