Prezas was recently published in the Texas Speech Language Hearing Association’s Communicologist publication.

The manuscript, titled, “Making the Right Dialectal Considerations During Assessment: Have We Reached a Turning Point?” addresses the importance of taking dialect into account when completing speech sound evaluations.

A case study is explored and guidelines and recommendations for evidence-based assessment practices are offered, which includes working with families.

The Office of Multicultural Affairs’ Brave Space Series is scheduled for 4 p.m. tomorrow in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Regents’ Suite A.

This month's session focuses on the politics, controversies and obsessions surrounding Afro-textured hair.

Students hold blood drive tomorrow

The Student-Athlete Advisory Council and the Organization of Athletic Training Students are holding a blood drive from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. tomorrow at the Field House.

Office of Multicultural Affairs to host Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration

SFA’s Office of Multicultural Affairs will host an MLK Celebration for members of the SFA and Nacogdoches communities to celebrate the life and legacy of civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, in the Baker Pattillo Student Center’s Twilight Ballroom.

The event will include music, dance and art presented by SFA students and community members. Dr. Tshepo Chéry, assistant professor in the Department of African and African Diaspora Studies at the University of Texas at Austin, will deliver a keynote address to conclude the celebration.

Tickets are available at the BPSC’s Information Desk. Tickets are $5 for faculty, staff and community members, and $3 for students. For more information, email oma@sfasu.edu.

Office of Multicultural Affairs to present second annual Women’s Empowerment Summit

The Office of Multicultural Affairs will present its second annual Women’s Empowerment Summit from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 2 in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Twilight Ballroom.

The summit will focus on empowering women from various backgrounds and include sessions where speakers will discuss empowerment in areas such as professional development, education, etiquette, health, body image and more.

The summit will feature two speakers: Jessica Soukup, a writer, feminist and activist for equal rights for transgender and gender-diverse people, and Miara Shaw, a professional development and life strategist.

This free event is open to the SFA and Nacogdoches communities. No tickets are needed, but interested participants must preregister online at sfasu.edu/oma by Feb. 28. Food will be provided.

Campus Recreation

Campus Recreation to host Spring Wellness Fair today

Campus Recreation’s Spring Wellness Fair will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the Baker Pattillo Student Center Grand Ballroom. The fair will provide resources and services from a variety of SFA and Nacogdoches organizations and businesses.

Services will include blood glucose screening, blood type testing, vision testing, wellness exams, chair massages, product samples, refreshments, educational materials and giveaways. About 30 local vendors will be present. In addition, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas representatives will be present to answer questions about the HealthSelect of Texas plan.

The event is free to all faculty and staff members and students. The Wellness Fair is a great opportunity for students to learn about various organizations on campus and in the community. Faculty members are encouraged to inform their students about the event.

Video works of artist Sarkisian opening reception tomorrow

“Peter Sarkisian: Video Works” will open with a reception and gallery talk by the artist from 6 to 8 p.m. tomorrow in The Cole Art Center @ The Old Opera House in downtown Nacogdoches.

The exhibition, which features video projections on sculpture, will show through April 21 in the Reavley Gallery. Sarkisian is an American new-media artist whose work combines video projection and sculpture to create a hybrid form of multimedia installation, according to John Handley, director of galleries for SFA's School of Art.
